Mom - Maricruz (26) Maricruz Mesino Gregorio finished high school but did not have the chance to continue studying because she had to work. At 16, she became pregnant with her first daughter. The relationship lasted 4 years, and they had 2 children together. They separated, leaving Maricruz alone with her two children. Her mother supported her, and she went to live at her mother’s house.
Three years ago, she left her hometown alone, leaving her children with her mother. She came to look for new opportunities because there was no work or economy where she lived. Her second child has a disability—he does not speak and has difficulty walking because he falls frequently. He is currently undergoing medical tests. Maricruz’s main wish is for her son to receive proper care.
She currently does not work because she has to go to her son’s school during recess to watch him, as he falls often.
Dad Rogelio (25) Rogelio EspĂritu Rojas is 25 years old and was born in Guerrero. When he was 2 years old, his biological mother left for the United States and stayed there. Rogelio stayed with his maternal grandmother. He finished high school and wanted to study architecture, but his grandmother became ill and he had to care for her, so his dream was never fulfilled.
Three years ago, Rogelio came to Maneadero with a cousin to seek better opportunities because there was no economy in his hometown. He currently works nights in the ICU Medical Factory.
Children:
Despite the hardships, Maricruz and Rogelio are determined to build a better life for their children.
Six months ago, they purchased a small piece of land and built a one-room shelter from wood and plastic(mainly pallets and tarps). It has no running water or electricity, and the space is far too small for a family of five with no privacy anywhere.
There is leaks in the roof which is leading to mold growing along the roof line and causing weakness in the structure.
They currently only have a water barrel which is hard to keep bugs and bacteria out of without a secure lid off the ground.
